but again like GIO said i dont think it REALLY matters one way or another.

unless your philosophical views actively make you depressed/hold you back in some way

i agree with this entire comment, i just dont agree with the assumptions that precede it.

my point is that the materialist view seems to rob life of a lot of meaning. your own wording kind of betrays this- its not exactly "an" experience if its the totality of experience, and a fleeting and finite one at that.

you have to wonder what the point of being with your loved ones is in a world where those relationships are just physiochemical processes that will eventually cease to function, leaving you with eternal oblivion.

again this isnt really something i believe, its just how i interpret that viewpoint.

Oh I understand, I think the issue that people have with not having life after death involves the clinging of self. We are born and have this innate desire to protect, serve and please self but at what point does this view become a burden and bring confusion, sorrow and pain?

So life isnt forever, its finite & limited...why is that such a issue for us? That's not a flaw of life itself but instead our understanding of our ourselves and our place in existence. We cling when we shouldnt. I believe us as humans have been hijacked by our own intelligence. We create problems that dont really exist.

i agree it isnt really worth thinking about.

its strange that you say this then make a bunch of presumptuous claims about life/reality though.

I’m talking about the people who dedicate their whole life to the presumption they’re right about an afterlife that in all likelihood doesn’t exist. Not like a, pray to god every Sunday type of thing. Nothing wrong with that. Like dedicating your life to preparing for death, working your life around that, and pushing for other people’s lives to be affected by your own beliefs in ways that hurt them

Unless you were referring to something else about the claims about life/reality

Don’t compromise living this life to the fullest or how you really want to just cause you believe there’s more after I guess

You’d jump into an alternative universe in which you either failed at suicide, were rescued at the last moment, or changed your mind.

what if you jump out of an airplane with no parachute onto land

i get what you're saying, its just kind of contradictory to have these strong views about the world and say what you just did.

if its the case that we have this single fleeting life then head off into oblivion, their way of living is no better or worse than yours.

none of these experiences carry over (under your view), so what does it matter if i pray every day or hop on KTT instead?

I get what you’re saying. I don’t know honestly. I think about that sometimes how like, we all care so much about all this s***, but for what. We’re not even here that long honestly. I guess there’s nothing better to do. Maybe it’s just about making the most of the time we got, so maybe it does matter to me

There are infinite amount of universes with different laws and features, literally anything being possible.

If you jump out of a plane, you could simply change to a universe in which f***ing Superman is real and he saves you or something.

But the thing is, you won’t notice you changed to a different universe... from your point of view, you would be the first human being who has ever been saved by Superman (and that might indeed be the case in this new universe).

However, from the point of view of your loved ones in your previous universe, you just jumped off a plane and died.
