i'm kinda high rn, but I think I was speaking to the "why" something is transphobic. It is pretty common for your average person to hear they're being transphobic and genuinely don't know why or what was the thing that made their comment transphobic.

i agree people should engage w theory but thats like one of those things which belongs in its own spaces. because the entire purpose of theory is to be challenged and discussed, so if questioning is it dismissed, it kinda defeats the purpose. that's why i separate the two, because i understand how people don't want their social issues "debated" when they're realities they're actually living through, but detached commentary or theory by comparison is literally made to be debated academically

Appealing to something isn't always bad. If you've been on this site long enough you know I've put down like 10+ pages per trans thread arguing with people. I'm not just flipping to suddenly be transphobic on a whim.

This stuff is similar to Jewish issues. In the sense that people will unknowingly say things like "The Jews got all the secrets, they're about their paper." without knowing why a Jewish person would call that anti-Semitic. Your average person would think & feel that they're giving Jewish people credit.

yeah i agree with you, that's part of what i was saying as well, someone not initially understanding why something might be offensive and then asking why its offensive should not itself be considered an offensive behavior. like people have a right to be offended at something someone did accidentally, sure, but people shouldn't make the assumption asking about it after being called out is automatically representative of the person trying to be hateful rather than just detached

yea. I hear a lot of people say s*** like "you can't tell people what they should and shouldn't be offended by." which is fine, but me asking why such and such is offensive to you, shouldn't be met with further hostility. I understand constantly getting that "why?" though would be agitating.

As a black man dealing with white people on a daily basis, I can definitely understand not wanting feel obligated to constantly educate other grown people. Trust me.
