I’m struggling to sympathize with because:

The professional moves he made did exactly what they were intended to do. Let’s just be honest: it’s clearly never been about the music for him. It’s not as simple as deciding that NOW it’s gonna be about the music FOR REAL. Nah man, literally half of all the promo you’ve ever done has been just deliberate attempts at shocking reactionaries, which I guess was kind of entertaining at first, but 5 years later, when you’re still trying to cultivate outrage with the gay robot jesus video, it becomes clear that music isn’t what you’re really selling. In this way he’s sort of like a Ben Shapiro type figure where his main export isn’t even some specific idea or project or whatever, he just exists to enrage his opponents, and other people live vicariously through that while he sits back and monetizes the engagements. This then all hit Lil Nas X at once and he was like f***, no one takes me seriously even though deep down I have sincere artistic visions I wanna get out, but I’ve spent my whole career pissing away my artistic credibility.
