I’ll tell you what that boy has a great future ahead of him as one of the 20s greatests in the same vein as Frank, Bino, and Ye during the 10s
How come he doesn't consider the two to be mutually exclusive?
A rapper can rap nice
But an artist knows how to craft an album with the full extent of their ability
Kendrick is an example I can think of
How come he doesn't consider the two to be mutually exclusive?
I think the fact that he differentiates between the two like this means he does consider them mutually exclusive
I'm still playing Running out of Time and Drive Me Crazy
Need him to further explore his new sound tho so, in
How come he doesn't consider the two to be mutually exclusive?
People say this, but ultimately I feel like this attitude that rappers like Yachty have are due to the mass delegitimization of the work that made them popular in the first place

Not pinning this on him. We know a certain group of people has tried to act like being a MC isn’t artistry

No it doesn’t lol

This though. People say stuff all the time like "Kanye an amazing artist but mediocre rapper", "Kendrick the better rapper but Drake the better artist", "J Cole a great rapper but mid artist" or strictly limit it to things like lyricism and wordplay when ranking rappers vs them as artists
But I already seen how they were moving after the Let's Start Here Pitchfork review mentioned that quote Yachty said. They just going to s*** on Yachty again and act like he's saying "rap is not art" or whatever

Yeah I mean you could be the greatest singer of all time but if your songs suck you aren't a great artist
Its like that imo
No it doesn’t lol
Mutually exclusive means both don't occur. So him saying "I proved myself as a rapper, not as an artist. Now I want to do the opposite" means he believes they are mutually exclusive

its not like yachty's early output is gonna help him either
there are entire demographics of rap fans who've written him off for years because of 2016 despite him having some crazy output these past few years
No it doesn’t lol
yes it does bro.
and you know it because Yachty is not the first nor the last rapper to make that claim differentiate between the two. Hell it's mad rappers that say it in their songs about how they're "more than a rapper they're an artist" and what not.
I blame the "rapper not a musician" mentality on the masses not realizing how easy it is to be just as trash/accessible with live instrumentation.

nah
i think there are preconceptions people have about yachty that he has never been able to remove as long as he raps. He could never establish himself artistically in rap if his reputation in rap precedes himself to the extent that it does. Even now, some of his best songs of the past few years fall on deaf ears because people literally hold him up to his 2016 output and not anything after
only something as radical as making a 90º shift into some crazy psych alt s*** could people change their stances, and even then there are people like the person above you who simply won't listen because they've established that yachty was bad, is bad, and always will be
