xcfe is very light weight but I feel like it's kinda dated with the look

I really like Gnome on my high performance machines and Mate on lower performance setups

xcfe was the first thing I ever tried after using Gnome forever

Yeah i was thinking of trying mate eventually. What differences do you notice from xfce?

You ever used i3 ot a tiled wm before?

it's really just about the menus and desktop experience

I find Mate really easy to navigate and I get nearly the same performance as I do in xcfe

I haven't I hear things tho from programming Linux types about using a tiled wm

lowkey want to build a linux htpc next year

I do want a proper NAS setup one day, its always been intriguing to me, especially having your own independent cloud service basically to do whatever you want and you don't have to pay BS subscription fees, especially with how corporations are fragmenting their media into subscription services and some releases are downgrades

my IT teacher is all about that s***, its f***ing sick

    Linux servers are goat.

Servers running Windows always a hassle.

Nah. There’s certain s*** I can get done faster in windows than I can in Linux.

It’s like also there’s certain s*** I can get done faster in VMware than I can in Hyper V.

Each has their pros and cons.

true but if you want to setup a server and forgot it about for an extended period of time you'll have more trouble

windows servers take more a bit more maintenance in my experience

I don’t understand why people like Gentoo if they’re not using an extremely special piece of hardware they need to compile for.

I honestly get the appeal but it’s like nerd masochism

    it’s extremely modular though

Its purely and truly a hobbist distro.

Anyone here tried FreeBSD or OpenBSD?

I actually haven't tried any BSD Unix. I would like to, but I simply have no use case for it that can't be fulfilled by Linux. I know OpenBSD has good reputation for security,

I got Arch Linux and Void Linux on my thinkpads

I think the X200/X201 series has to be my favorites in the line, it's a shame they don't make any newer thinkpads with the same chassis.

    hello friends

    will add more info overtime

Post any servers / desktops you have (Distros also), I use it far more on servers than desktop but I've been trying to get into Linux desktop

My server runs fedora but I kinda messed up my installation when i didn't update it for 2 years and then skipped several versions, lol. Planning on switching to Debian.

Unpopular opinion but every desktop environment is ugly as hell unless you rice the s*** out of it. Not that I use any distro on my desktop anymore.

Is Parrot more cutting edge compared to Kali or something? Never heard of that OS before.

i wouldn’t say more cutting edge, it’s just more suited for everyday use compared to kali

kali is really only intended for pentesting and pentesting only. you can (and need to for some things) store data, but generally don’t want to run a constant storage where you are saving everything you are doing

parrot is more about privacy than pentesting, and while may be a bit overkill for some, it’s nice to have the privacy options available right out of the box
