At the very least it accomplishes mass awareness. This isn’t the first riot and likely won’t be the last. It’s a bad look for the protestors but nobody cares about a protest. Nobody cares about anything that isn’t happening to them unless it’s crazy enough to grab their attention. This is probably the only thing they can do that’ll cause a reaction.
