May 31, 2020I talked to my parents about the riots and they don’t like the violence. Disappointment, frustration, sadness are all normal responses that people are entitled to. But it is important to contextualize the riots as it pertains to a global pandemic and a subsequent recession that have magnified long-standing wealth and racial inequality. If people aren’t dying, then their livelihoods are collapsing, yet elected officials eager to prioritize self-interests and maintain the established power of corporations continue to ignore the plight of their constituents. And I think the unusual circumstance of this situation is why these riots have so much resonance.
Riots are not meant to be rational, rather they are a last resort measure when all bureaucratic resources have been exhausted. We’ve done sit-ins, we’ve done every nonviolent method of protest, we’ve contacted our representative for justice, vote, but to no avail. What more can we do?
