To give a very brief history on it, back in the day when they would do IQ tests they would rank IQ on a scale using words like "dumb", "stupid", "imbecile" as like...almost medical terms to determine one's intelligence. They actually had no association when mental re-tardation because that was viewed as an entirely separate thing not related to one's intelligence. After awhile they realized using those words is dumb in and of itself because those words essentially all mean the same thing and don't even accurately determine intelligence.
