I don’t necessarily subscribe to the idea that she doesn’t “care” about commercial success.
It’s kind of impossible to not keep something like that in mind in the position she’s in. That’s not to say she has to chase some sort of sound that is buzzing right now, but to position yourself in that kind of framing being the commercial artist she is feels a bit disingenuous because that’s really not how the industry works.
could it simply be that her art and expression is valued way higher than the numbers? like of course. she's a signed recording artist. she has to recoup. she presumably doesn't want to fail, who does? but if it's at the expense of her craft, i think she's decided where that balance stands.
"Lorde’s Work Here Is Done. Now, She Vibes." the hell is this article title man

I mean there's definitely a balance that a lot of artists have to strike. The initial appeal of Lorde was kind of how she didn't really fit into the mold of what was popular at the time in the early 10's. I guess I just view it as there's this layer of pretentiousness within her statements that wasn't as endearing as it was when she was a teenager.

yeah. you're certainly not alone in that
i just hope we all can put preconceived notions aside and go into this project with open ears. the lead-up to this album has been shaky compared to what we're used to from her, but i believe there's still so much to appreciate about Lorde as an artist and hopefully that's what the focus is on when it comes.
as i was typing that i realized how easily i could swap out Lorde's name for Lana during the last rollout lol
barely listening to stoned at the nail salon now and love it
