without s***ting on you or Taylor it reminds me of Taylor partly because it’s so cliche and unoriginal lyrically lol
i hear you
her voice is really captivating even over minimal production imo
But over darker production like this
And the falsetto she’s doing here just doesn’t work for a whole album by any stretch
Joel Little loves organs a lot tbh I've noticed this listening to his stuff
even outside of Lorde. Think Young, Dumb, and Broke
I just don’t get why artists like Lorde that are so good at picking unconventional production that progresses in weird directions as songs develop pick to do albums like this that throws all that out the window
That’s something I appreciate about Kanye. Sure he throws the quality of almost everything else out the window sometimes but he’s very aware of that ability he has and he never ever lets that slip
yeah you can't say a kanye production has ever really sounded drab

She wanted a change of pace, makes sense to me. I probably wont be replaying this as much as PH and Melodrama (I still listen to those in full every year) but I think it's cool for what it is. Somewhat socially conscious and somewhat personal, this is her swan dance. She could probably retire atp if she wanted to
we've been through so many hard times, i'm writing a love song for you baaaby
that lil bit is so sweet. it should've appeared once or twice more in the song. i love it as is tho

I really fw it lol
He’s pretty iffy now but he has some really great beats
I love young dumb and broke even if it’s a slightly guilty pleasure listen

Yeah but his songwriting has gone downhill incredibly
gotta be honest I’m pretty disappointed despite really liking the singles
It’s not bad but it’s clearly not as good as her first two and is clearly not going to reach their level over time at least for me
It’s a shame too because she’s clearly improved vocally and I think her songwriting is probably better (more complex) here than ever before
but it just strips almost everything that made Lorde so great - the pop writing, the unique production, the edge and angst, the completely original but relatable lyrics, the complete self awareness
it reminds me a lot of what Frank did with blonde where he stripped down a lot of what made channel orange so successful but the difference is that Frank doubled down on relatability, he added back that unique production through vocal effects and to be honest he’s just a better writer than Lorde so he could pull it off
there’s plenty to like here but I just think it drags especially in the slower songs and regardless of the presence of some self awareness and satire it just feels nauseating at times
The biggest issue is that it goes from unbelievably relatable on her first two projects to borderline completely unrelatable on here in terms of being largely about fame and burnout and when you don’t have the pop melodys or the interesting production that just goes down like a lead balloon
It’s still like a 7 for me but yea it’s not at all worth a 4 year wait
Nice remark about Frank and Blonde
Kinda shows how actually insanely talented Frank is (but also Blonde is not a Jack Antonoff album so its production is not bland, it’s minimalistic in a highly tasteful way so it actually keeps you captivated throughout the whole thing)

I don’t really have an issue w the change of pace it’s just that none of these songs do anything interesting on that front
Like I don’t need some dark beat switch I just need enough progression and variation in the songs to keep me engaged beyond just guitar driven song #5

I mean I’ll go ahead and say it even if I get flack, but this reminds me a ton of how I felt on the first listen of JIK. The first time this artist that I’ve held in such high esteem has genuinely let me down. I feel the same sense of so close yet so far here that I did there.

agree
Almost exactly the same where I could feel myself tryna grapple for a way to convince myself I really liked it and just couldn’t

I feel you, yeah I agree it could have been better. I noticed it with Melodrama and esp with this album she abandoned the unique progression songs carried on PH,
after listening to stoned a couple more times and in the context of the album, i still don't like it that much - i think it drags on too long and it's pretty uneventful
i really want to play this entire album during peak australian summer though. secrets from a girl and mood ring are definitely highlights for me.

yea that’s a good point re production choices
Blonde was weird and felt flat early on because the production was so minimal but it is so well done whereas here it just feels drab a lot of the time
Just finishing the last song rn
Extremely underwhelming I can't imagine myself revisiting this, especially with PH and Melodrama right next to it on Apple Music

Pure Heroine will probably always be my favorite Lorde project .
Its in my top 10 OAT tbh.
Such a special album
The Path, Fallen Fruit and Dominoes are 3 of my favorite songs this year already tbh
So where do we go from here because I actually have zero clue what to expect after this

These, California and mood ring are for sure my favorites on here
