lucian grainge call out in Away From Home

“Who the CEO of Universal? They mistaken
'Cause Google sayin' Lucian, but that just doesn't make sense
Who fillin' up the piggy bank? Who bringin' home the bacon?
    This s*** don't come on vinyl, I'm still record-breakin'
How could I forget? How could I forget?”

ye in drink champs interview mentioned how universal is playing with drake, and how him and drake need to lead the movement to stop the power Universal / Sony has over black artist

this is the same arch michael and prince were on towards the end of their careers

drake has subtly hinted he isn’t rocking with them in past, but this overt diss is very intresting especially since he said he is stepping away from music for a while

on the track Splash Brothers he said that he doesn’t wanna go independent

    cool info tho

It will never be an even playing field and what you’re saying just simply isn’t true for most artists. Artists who choose to do what you’re saying end up spending almost all their time marketing or going heavily out of pocket so someone else can. A label isn’t going to distribute you if you don’t at least give up something, there’s no leverage against billion dollar corporations with every connection in entertainment 🤦🏾‍♂️

Yes, labels will distribute your s*** for a cut of the pie but is far between a 360 deal under a label lol, it's closer to a partnership. If you don't sign early and already have a hit then there is a lot of leverage. It's just these labels are quick to sign an artist when they got like 10k followers and most artists in that position will be to naive to know better. Keep in mind, we once lived in an era where you couldn't get your s*** popping independently and the industry was gate-kept, everyone was an industry plant and had the worse deals because they had no leverage. We've come a long way since then. Not saying s*** is perfect but if you know better, you'll be able to dodge the potholes

Dawg what I’m telling you is that as an independent artist you are already walking into the room at a loss because you are going up against the best lawyers money can pay for.

So number one you gotta come out of pocket for good representation which could be >$2000

Before you even get in the room, you have to be able to market yourself and gain a following, which if you don’t spend money, then you spend time. So already, you could be in the hole >$5000, have no time as entrepreneurship is a 24/7 job, before you even get any eyes looking to even give you a partnership.

You can have all the education in the world, but when you actually break things down it is not easy. I know a girl who had a major connection at a label, and she still couldn’t get signed because she couldn’t afford to pay the costs to self promote (they WILL NOT distribute you or even sign you to a 360 if you don’t have any type of MAJOR following), pay a lawyer, and manage her social media.

It’s a lot to handle nowadays dawg, even if it looks easy from the outside looking in.

I get that. I'm just saying that things are better nowadays than they were in the past. I guess it depends on what type of artist you are as well. There are a lot of niggas who just posted a song online and had a hit without having to do a whole lot of marketing. I get what u mean tho

And the tricky thing is that if he did it now it would get spun to him falling off especially since people are tired of aspects of him already

Would have changed everything if he did this at whatever deal was right before or after Views

This “break” is some kind of play against the label. Who knows how many albums there are left on the deal, he must want to renegotiate or something
