I thought this was a good album, is it actually true that this didn’t show up on Billboard 200? That’s a crime.

Understandable as the surface of that song is like the antithesis of The Cool, the closest he ever leaned into typical rapper cliches. But my takeaway with Gold Watch was always “The most important parts are the ones that are unseen, the wings don’t make you fly and the crown don’t make you king”. The bait and switch is what made the song effective at all. It’s like sure, these things are cool, but they’re still just things. Nothing compared to all the positive qualities that actually define you as a person. Maybe the message became a little muddied with time, but there were good intentions here.
Anyway, can't believe we got DMIZ cause Chill was bored lol. This interview was def less organic than the last couple, but basically confirmed the futility I was feeling from this album, like maybe you can't save the world anymore. The words from the commander tho, that's all it takes to keep you going.
Don’t forget the intro setting it up “let’s peruse the essentials of cool”. I always took the whole thing as commentary and also being human and just talking about s*** you like. I know there’s the materialism element but he’s also talking I like green now or laters and listen to UNKLE. Still probably my favorite Lupe song it’s a good mix of fun and message for me, I don’t think the message is really muddy and I feel like with the conclusion you mentioned he shouldn’t really regret it. No one really listening ever took that as some unironic unabashed flexing, even the hook is a bit tongue in cheek. In fact I can almost see the song as a sister to KIOSK. It was clear in the end that it wasn’t on some materialist s*** but maybe he’s just bothered by the brands in particular

remember lu said that chill was his first fan and the one who pushed him most. if chill need something, he gon get it done off the strength
i really hope he's free'd soon. 15 years since he made Free Chill
I don't know. I don't really listen to rap. I don't really care about their music and what they're doing because music comes and goes. It changes. It's there, it's not there. It's responsive. It's reactionary. It's all of those things. At the end of the day, when I look at my fellow peers in this craft, I'm just concerned about their well-being. Not how they did on a record.

For sure, if he made a whole song that only captured the feeling of the 3rd verse, it would have came off more preachy. Instead, he was able to have fun with it and it's a personal gem when most of his music tells other people's stories.

I think Chill is the reason Gold Watch is on The Cool lol. "No matter what you do, you do Gold Watch. You do it for me, that's my record."
Nah this interview got good half way through
He said he f***ed up by making gold watch
Such a trash song on a classic album

i love that song.
I REALLY hate the beat
So annoying. Like it’s so distracting that I just can’t listen to the song
And just a low point that makes the album drop to a snails pace
Though I always skip it but it just isn’t for me

it was definitely a grower. put me onto so much street wear and that last verse is special.
I hated the gold watch beat for years too. Definitely grew on me though. Love the song now
Damn always thought Gold Watch was a instant crowd favorite
mostly for the fashion base and hype beasts. the beat was definitely an acquired taste
