Both , but in the 90s lyrics was way more important
Yeah I honestly don't like the production in that era aside from the obvious classic stuff and legendary producers. There's a reason producers from then on based their sound on the stuff that actually held up, the from scratch stuff from that era felt too dull, even if the melodies weren't bad. Most sample based beats were missing some consistency in sounds and limited sample choice to whatever felt Hip Hop enough at the time.
Hard one tbh. If the beat is trash the lyrics have to be mind blowing to make up for it. But if the beat is fire the lyrics can be gibberish for all i care
Production way more important
Even if your flow and delivery are on point with amazing lyrics u can only go so far with a trash beat...into the dust bin
