There Will Be Blood - MBDTF
    Punch Drunk Love - Yeezus
Magnolia - Late Registration also Jon Brion collab on both those
Boogie Nights - The College Dropout
Inherent Vice - The Life of Pablo both wild disconnected epics
    The Master - Graduation
    Phantom Thread - 808s

Have never seen Hard Eight but that'd probably be like Ye's production career before the college dropout

have to rewatch Phantom Thread. loved the cinematography and performances but movie is very subtle .
Inherent vice - TLOP is so on point but I was bored out of my mind watching it

I love the movie but I’m not as crazy about the final act of the movie as much as the buildup personally, whereas TWBB and The Master are genius the whole way through imo

Only seen The Master, which was pretty great but you have to be in the mood for it

Inherent Vice, which was okay but a little too vague for me

    &

There Will Be Blood, but i was so young that i dont even remember anything really. Need a rewatch

I've been wanting to check the rest of his filmography out for so long but i'm never in the mood to put on a film by him, always go with another option

This is the only PTA movie I didn’t watch, I f***ing despise Tom Cruise

I'm not too big on him either but i really liked his performances in Edge Of Tomorrow & Eyes Wide Shut

i think magnolia is better than boogie nights. i'm more interested in watching other films, so it's going to be a long time before i watch another one by pta. i watched boogie nights and magnolia because i think julianne moore in her prime is the sexiest woman of all time. i'm also going to watch short cuts and safe (1995) because she's in it. i've watched the big lebowski a long time ago, which is my favorite film with julianne moore, and was my favorite film ever until i started watching films by david lynch.

I'm blown away at how young PTA was when he made these movies like how the f*** does someone convince studio to let him make this kind of stuff in his twenties. Inspiring but depressing at same time

I felt like The master dragged a little longer than it should

You won't be disappointed, TWBB it's still his best tho.

  • gets worse with every rewatch unfortunately. i think doubling up the characters hurts it, one too many old white guys dying, one too many spouses cheated on

@op do you still hold this opinion?

I think Magnolia is great but the magic of it has worn off for me. I see more of its flaws. It's interesting because I think for his age, it felt like a very "mature" film but now I sort of see it as "what a 20-something" thinks is mature rather than what really is mature.

I personally think Phantom Thread is his best work.

  • His best with OBAA

  • I’m going to watch it tonight, I heard there’s a 4k release coming and I wanted that to be my first watch but I’m caving.
I watched Manhunter last week and a 4K is coming out of that so I’m iffy but screw it

  • magnolia is not my personal fave but its one that is the fave of people who's opinions and i like and admire. same with jackie brown and QT. usually people with goat film tastes say jackie is goat QT and magnolia is goat PTA

  • There Will Be Blood is clearly his "greatest film". It's a testament to film as both a commercial commodity and an American religion. It interrogates how such things are sold to the public, how those things do battle for the souls of men, how those things distort morality and humanity. It's a manifesto about maintaining autonomy in a landscape of impersonal conglomerates. The strain it puts on you mentally and socially, how selfish it all is.

I have the greatest affection for The Master, but There Will Be Blood is his calling card. It's the boring answer for a reason. As for "best film", he has several perfect ones to his name as far as I'm concerned. He's not an interesting director to rank imo. Concise filmography.

Nah I currently have it at 2 depending on where OBAA lands after more time has passed.

    TWBB is #1 for sure.

Phantom thread might be his most mature work tho

Phantom Thread is the contrarian pick. He got his own Barry Lyndon.

  • Boogie nights still 1
