I would call this a paranormal giallo slasher

Calling it a giallo slasher isn’t enough Bc it incorporates a lot of paranormal The Conjuring esque elements to it

It’s not really paranormal but I know what you mean. A lot of that is just misdirection that plays up what Wan’s been comfortable doing in the genre for the last decade. Someone put this really well on Letterboxd.

“Tricks you by pretending to be another polished haunted house trauma movie for a bit, then a serial murder mystery with the kind of surreal, gory, primary-color-lit sequencing you'd expect of italy; all before pulling the rug on both to reveal an... action movie version of the grindhouse, conjoined-creature splatter-horror of frank henenlotter”

Seriously, Wan needs to do Blade or Hellboy or Underworld or something. He's a lot better at action. I'm over the haunted house jump scare s\*\*\*

It reminds me a lot of Cronenberg’s The Brood. If you haven’t seen that, check it out ASAP.

If anyone should do anything with the Nightmare on Elm St franchise it’s Wan.

I wouldn't at all say he’s better at action. He has a dictionary level knowledge of the horror genre. He’s competent at action and mixes it well into his horror now like with stuff like this. The Conjuring 2 and the original Saw are definitely better than his action work.

stop that would be sick. we need another remake after the last one (way too rapey)

james wan doing a new remake would make my year tbh and everyone wins from the studio to wan to fans

Actually highlighting Freddy as the pedo he always ways was the least of that movies problems (they did lean into it a bit too much). It was just so damn soulless and uninspired. You could tell no one involved cared. Micro naps thing was cool tho.

Saw had fun traps and procedural plot twists and what not. It pretty much is part action with the police protagonists. I didn't think much of Insidious. I don't think mood setting and tone are his strongsuit. Nor is character work. He's got ambitious camerawork and action puts that to use. John Wick s\*\*\* isn't scary. The haunted house stuff in this was abysmal. Borderline unwatchable. The campy opening was fun and the supervillain / action stuff at the end was fun. I didn't even watch Aquaman and don't remember Furious 7\. I don't think either are action horror which is what I think he might be great at. Resident Evil or Dino Crisis or something.

Yeah we just completely disagree on like literally all of this. Can’t really engage with the points when I would just be saying the opposite.

So the middle stretch of Malignant is your favorite part? The hotel and haunted house and underground tunnel and whodunnit stuff? Not the awesome opener and jail sequence at the end? Because otherwise we agree lol

I like it all man. I think it flows naturally. I like that it bounces from sub genre to sub genre recontexualizing everything that proceeded it. The middle section has the most unnerving imagery, but the climax is just totally cathartic and exciting.
