Bruno Fernandes has been the best and most consistent player for us post fergie, call him a cry baby all you want he shouldn’t be captain no but who the hell else would you give it to? He’s the best of the worst in that aspect but he’s always running, always putting in a shift wherever he’s asked to play. He’s never had a consistent decent midfield behind him so he ends up doing to much but to want him gone is insane. His numbers speak for himself whether you think it’s stat padding or not, they are there along with the countless chances he creates. I think he will go in the summer regardless tbh and we will miss him dearly. He’s been a class signing

Bruno Fernandes is a good player. When it comes to raw chance creation volume and creativity, Fernandes is one of the best players in the league.

Concurrently, Bruno Fernandes is a wildly volatile passer, poor at dribbling and most importantly struggles retaining the ball under pressure. Whilst he has incredible stamina levels, he often runs aimlessly in an isolated press, leaving huge gaps in midfield (as Scholes alludes to in the video tweet on this page).

From a short term perspective: Bruno Fernandes leaving this side will be massive drop from individualistic heavy stats.

From a medium/long term perspective: I would happily replace Bruno Fernandes with an industrial no.8 with half of his goals/assists/chance creation stats if he helps knit play together at an elite level. Someone who can turn a man, carry the ball in pockets, and help disorientate the deep blocks we’d come up against.

I look at it like this, just as example – from an individual player ability level, who is better as a pure no.10: Bruno Fernandes or Martin Odegaard? For me, the Portugeezer, easy. However, who would I want in my team to have ideal midfield balance and help play a consistent brand of football? I’d take Odegaard.

You really think Fernandes would play his hot potato ball if he played in a Pep team?

He’s a driven player of exceptional ability plus one who seems fairly intelligent as well. Bro could easily become a player with great ball retention with better positioning who could play in a real system. But only if trained to do so, Ole and now ETH let him do whatever he wants which makes him undisciplined in regards to positioning and decision making. Which I agree will get him better individual stats but which is not better for the team as a whole.

Coaches like Pep and Arteta would kill someone to have a player like him in their squad imo.

I think Bruno Fernandes wouldn’t see the light of day in a Pep Guardiola team.

He’s fundamentally incompatible with that style of football.

Players can be good players and not suit systems. Bruno Fernandes is one of those players.

Edit: he has horrible ball retention skills and he’s nearly 30 years old. There’s no retraining the player. What you see is what you get.

Put him as a no.10 behind two holding midfielders in a system like Ole set up and he’ll get you 20+ G/A a season. That’s Fernandes’ peak.

And some players I wouldn’t mind sold either if we can get a quality replacement basically consists of the rest of our squad:

Either AWB or Dalot can go
Malacia maybe if we get a new starter LB
Rashford for a good bid
Pellistri hasn’t impressed me enough either
Antony, if anybody wants him
Onana, if he doesn’t improve over the season
And if we get Saudi bids for Casemiro and Varane I wouldn’t mind them going out either

One of ETH biggest flaws was granting clemency to so many players that failed in earlier seasons that basically threw Ole and Ralf under the bus cus they finished second the year before. We need real heavyweights as executives if we even want to get half of these players out tho.

There have been dumber players that have adapted to Pep’s style of play. Was Grealish a ball retention player at Villa? Not even close. Now all he does is ball retention.

His current playing style is incompatible with Pep’s style of play, there is very little evidence he couldn’t adapt to it. I don’t think his age has much to do with it.

Uhh… Grealish was literally all ball retention, lol. Insane close control dribbling, routinely beating players to the byline, and shielding the ball to win fouls is Grealish’s biggest strengths and that’s exactly why Pep signed him. He was a bit of a heroballer being Villa’s only good player but the fundamentals of his football were exactly what Pep wanted

There’s so much evidence that Bruno couldn’t adapt to Pep’s style of football, but we’re clearly at crossroads so agree to disagree.

I guess we’ll see who’s right if we ever get a coach that values these things. Which I hope we do.

But I also agree with Gren above, I’d rather have a Odegard type. And it’s unclear if Bruno would ever change.

Bruno adds nothing to our pressing / midfield tracking too. He runs forever but it is aimless often times.

Ugly. Add crashing out of UCL group stages to that after on paper, being handed quite an easy group with only 1 top opponent in Bayern.

In hindsight now, how the Ronaldo, Sancho, maguire, situations got handled seem wrong too. Especially with how this rashford thing is going down. Idk how he didn’t get fined or something post city club night.

But the biggest blemish against him: The fact that he’s had 2 full summers to build his team and after 1.5 years in charge, he’s got less stylistic identity than even Ole, a guy we said had no tactical acumen what so ever, is astonishing.
