He said no to wearing a rainbow jacket. Teammates backed him as they didnāt wanna single him out. Non story imo same drama as guehi writing I love Jesus on his rainbow armband. Clicks clicks clicks.

Had this conversation with a friend about token āsupportiveā gestures like rainbow laces and the armband etc.
Iām literally gay so top yourself if youāre homophobic, but I do think that thereās a nuanced conversation to have about it.
1. People refusing to wear an armband for āreligious reasonsā but being seemingly completely fine with wearing a shirt with betting companies on it is the definition of cherry picking (specifically in relation to the Ipswich captain).
2. I donāt think what Marc Guehi did was an issue at all and think him of all people being fined is ridiculous.
3. You can be religious and still support and respect gay people. There are so many ridiculous rules/commandments/teachings in religious scripture that people completely ignore. Using your religion to single out homosexuality genuinely is homophobia at worst and ignorance at best.
4. Football as a sport and I guess a culture generally is incredibly homophobic (most sports are). Thatās just the state of it, itās very evident.
5. I appreciate that these campaigns may have started as well-intentioned etc but I do think theyāre basically reduced to rage bait on social media and in the media.
6. I donāt agree with the FA specifically fining players when the FA made the decision to not wear the Rainbow Armband at the Qatar World Cup. I donāt agree with the decision they made either. If youāre about it, be about it at all times, or donāt.
All of those things are true imo. Didnāt intend for this post to be an essay but I do think itās an interesting conversation to have.

See that seems especially dumb to me imo bc nobody has heard of this jacket outside of this story. The media also get at our players more than anybody, especially if theyāre not white and/or British (media coverage of Rashford for example vs media coverage of Grealish) etc.

and yeah iām one of those multi-club people unfortunately to reply to that previous post, itās liverpool and madrid, been a ronaldo fanboy as a kid + became a barca hater at that time and since that the team just sorta grew close to my heart and iāve just continued to stick with them even after ronaldo left so iāll always watch a madrid game unless liverpool is on

also regarding the arsenal allegations theyāre sorta right too, my dadās an arsenal fan so thats kinda what i grew up on and slavia - arsenal was the first game he took me to so itās canāt completely hate on the club even if i wanted to, theyāre probably my 2nd favorite english side. itās not like iām a fan fan but i do kinda root for them and really wanted them to win the title in that 22/23 season where liverpool was in the mud the whole season and it seemed like arsenal might be the one to f*** citeh over lol

Hit the nail on the head, embarassing look on the part of everyone involved.
As much as I may disagree with them, people's personal beliefs and convinctions should be respected. A player refusing to wear a rainbow armband isn't an act of emotional injury towards any queer person in and of itself. Matter of fact ostentation in such instances often has the reverse effect.
