    I think it’s so depressing that all of the astronauts from moon missions will die without seeing any successors make it back to the moon since.

    Incredibly superficial understanding of projects like these. That's not to say you can't criticize specific, profit-driven ventures like Elon's- you absolutely should.

    But in the abstract, the value in trying to reach Mars is that it facilitates innovation within all of the technological spheres associated with it.

    Getting to Mars means improvements in communications systems and power supplies, propulsion systems and spacesuits, robotics, etc. ... all of which could translate to "real rewards" in fields like asteroid mining.
