holy f***
can't lie tho i feel like the space exploration/mars colonization mindset can be used as a cop out on earth
dont get me wrong there's a ton of value in exploring the possibilities but also like earth is dope too
beautiful tbh
if thats real it looks like a piece of s*** rock
Well firstly, what did you expect before opening this thread? Sincere question.

That's exactly what it is lol. It's trying for a clean slate. It will never happen sadly because we just don't have enough time
Human exploration
Of Mars? No clue. It doesn't really have any bearing on my point though.
Some related companies have set timelines as early as this decade, although that's obviously incredibly generous.

I mean that's your entire point if you're calling for it to be taken serious

I don't think you understood me correctly then. Innovation is a process that occurs concurrently with the process of reaching Mars.
For instance, let's say that it takes 15 years for a crewed flight to Mars. Presumably, numerous advancements in communications, robotics, etc. occur within that 15 year span that are useful in their own right, regardless of whether Mars has actually been reached.
As a real-life example, our attempts at achieving fusion energy have numerous sparked discoveries in nuclear physics and supercomputer-based simulations, despite the fact that we haven't actually 'achieved' it (in the sense that the energy returns don't exceed the energy costs).
Now, don't conflate my point with undeserved optimism. To claim that Elon Musk journeying to Mars = societal prosperity would be absurd. However, within the currently existing capitalistic system, an investment in such an endeavor is more valuable than many other R&D investments...

Oh I agree with you about that. I meant more specifically terraforming mars

Terraforming capability is hundreds of years away
Terraforming capability is hundreds of years away
Which is why I said it will never happen.
In your lifetime.
By the time the majority of humanity will no longer exist in any meaningful capacity.
