End of the day if Marty can return his serve, he can beat him

He's right tho. The real life marty said as much in his memoir

How reliable was real life Marty tho
How reliable was real life Marty tho
I would assume in this particular instance, pretty reliable. Because the paddle the Japanese player used ended up becoming the standard for all players afterwards

Plus their battle in this was inspired by Marty Reisman vs Hiroji Sato irl. They played each other twice and it played out like in the film. It was always about the fact that Sato was using a more advanced paddle and beat Marty the first time due to that. Once Marty adjusted, he beat him. And apparently Sato was so shook by this loss he never played a game competitively again
So yes. Marty was more skilled.
Oscar Winner bum ass dont know s*** as usual
why would that scene take hours
https://twitter.com/discussingfilm/status/2006102136224919842And niggas be wondering how these budgets get so over inflated lmao I wouldn’t even waste more than 5 mins on that scene 😂
Legit been on repeat for a few days atp
I have a lot of different feelings about this movie and character, like don’t get me wrong I loved the movie but the story itself gives me mixed feelings, maybe hits too close to home idk. Watched it about 3 times now after the first 70mm showing and it only gets better ngl.
It’s like on one hand he obviously knew he had a chance at really changing the trajectory of his life and everyone else's around him while chasing this thing and while he did make s***ty choices it was always with the goal in mind of him making sure he was able to display his talents at the highest level possible, he wasn’t delusional he actually was that good.
But on the other hand he was just some kid obsessed with playing ping pong and I totally see why everyone would want him to just give that bs up and actually take a look at his life for what it is and it honestly wasn’t much outside of him causing chaos in everyones else's life.
But think about it, would some kid coming from where he’s from and his implied upbringing even see what he got to see and experience if he didn’t make those questionable choices and ruffle those feathers. In all honesty this is a story about a kid who at birth was prescribed a life of nothing but mundanity and him actively refusing that reality at whatever costs imaginable.
Now does that make him a character that’s easy to root for? No. But man when you really take a look at what his life was gonna be had he ignored his talents he was gonna be even more of a miserable a****** than he already was if he never at least kept that dream alive in his mind.
9.5/10
A lot of good supporting roles in this. Tyler was actually pretty good in this tbh not really fan of him but he definitely has a future in movies. Only miss for me in this was Gwenyth’s character, her acting was good but could’ve done without half of her scenes and the movie wouldn’t miss a beat tbh
One thing I find interesting is how people read things into the character of Endo that aren’t really explicit.
Like this is Marty’s movie, and we see him, warts and all. Hubris upfront. Recklessness clear.
A lot of what we get for Endo was filtered through literal Japanese propaganda. Or through Marty’s “that motherfucker” lens.
So when people say s\*\*\* like Endo actually didn’t care that he lost the exhibition match, or that he let Marty win, you literally don’t know that lol we have no idea who Endo is outside of ping pong. He could be just as obsessed with it as Marty is. Like it’s an unranked match so obviously it doesn’t matter too much to him, but to say it means nothing is crazy like what are you basing that on?
It’s like a team lost the Super Bowl, but fell off majorly and was 1-9 the next season, then they come in and narrowly beat the defending Champs who are predicted to repeat in their houses. Obviously it’s just a regular season game and means very little, and the other team puffing their chests out like it avenges their loss look foolish, but it is at least a little embarrassing for the defending champs.
You would have to really not care about your craft or have next to no ego at all to not have that bug you at least a little. And I just don’t think we had enough reliable insight into Endo to know that.

Well in real life, Endo (or the person he’s based on) quit ping pong competitively after that L
I’m sure that person deeply cared but also that person entered the tournament in large part to “restore” Japans honor after losing in WW2 and getting their standing in the world back up again. So the fact he lost probably brought a lot of shame to Japan

Oh wow. I had no idea they pulled from real life for more than just Marty and the guy he was based on.
He's right tho. The real life marty said as much in his memoir
This isn’t real life Marty homie. And movie Marty was always making some excuse when he was losing. I can’t stand athletes like that, it’s always someone else’s fault

I don’t think he was that hard to root for. He definitely isn’t Connie from good time lol
