As someone who closely watched and interacted heavily with the entire unfolding of No Way Home from the leaks to predictions to box office, I can say that Sony would have left hundreds of millions of box office revenue off immediate curiosity driven momentum if they revealed Andrew and Tobey from day one at say Comic Con. The word of mouth was so fast because of the LEAKING curiosity born out of online leaks into the general population. Yes, anecdotal but there were folks who weren’t even into superhero media that asked me if it was true cause some of em saw it on Facebook. Tobey and Andrew coming back was an idea that juicy. “They’re saying RDJ is playing Doctor Doom do you think it’s true? I don’t” is a leak idea that juicy.

Not saying Doomsday is gonna suffer in hundreds of millions because of that, but I am saying they lost out majorly on that type of more positive if even controversial curiosity that would add an unreal level of curious momentum for the film from every type of demographic. Like it’s called Doomsday it’s setting up Secret Wars, they’re battling Doctor Doom and the og Fox Men are back with Scott Summers looking to be done justice. Then Tobey is returning?

Y’all had enough in the tuck to let RDJ just be a secret until opening weekend. At worst it would be a leak (that people would deny let’s be realistic) and something RDJ plays down when asked in interviews. Then the question becomes who is playing Doom? A bunch of fake “leaks” would come out about who’s playing Doom, big exciting names. It would become clear to some that it’s RDJ closer to release, but a lot of folks would deny it. Also note how we still don’t have RDJ leaked in actual leaks, they only mention him in plot leaks to add a note addressing the reveal of his casting - to say it’s not addressed. No Tony from photo leaks, just Doom.

I say that part to say…it might not even have been leaked. They missed out big time in revealing it, now there’s a huge amount of cynical distrust due to the day one reveal from the company itself. Now the s*** is crossing $1.6 billion at the box office guaranteed let’s be clear, but if this doesn’t live up to the pressure, this is gonna be a mountain to climb. One they didn’t have to build.
