Is it an impossibility that two movies could be in IMAX at the same time? I would imagine something is worked out if so.

It's possible with other films sure. But not with IMAX's star filmmaker. Sony/Disney scheduled that date knowing this could happen so its on them.

Nolan is the reason general audiences see new films and CBMs in IMAX. He's an innovator of the format, an actual partner with the company and their biggest supporter. He notoriously books his release date and screens years in advance, and got IMAX to invent new cameras for the film that'll be the first showcase of a full film shot on its cameras. Universal also proved demand by selling out dates a year in advance.

Spider-Man doesn't deserve screens just for being a big film. Its not shot on their cameras and would only require it for upcharges on box office sales. It'll still prob make a billion easily and has other premiums like Dolby.
