The Jackal was the villain manipulating the Punisher into trying to take out Spider-Man in his first appearance.

Okay I get you now although it appears punisher can’t be controlled in this

I see it as a sort of wink wink for the people who are in the know, but not a straight adaptation of that story.

Again though, if that is the case, having the Punisher show up and having this sort of underlying theme of manipulation would make sense for people in the know.
