  • Watched yesterday. Movie is obviously pretty damn good but it's not quite great. Definitely the best live action since Spiderman 2 imo

This is the best movie in terms of great looking Spiderman scenes (the camera work during those Hulk and The Hand scenes, the slow mo scenes, the swinging all went insano) but you can clearly see the influence Insomniac's games had on this The web grenade gadget, the web torpedo thing, the slides, he did the dodge jump exactly from the game. Not saying that's a bad thing, just something I picked up

Kinda felt like we were thrown in the middle of this story. Even if you have kept up with the MCU, it feels like you missed a Spiderman movie with the relationship between Spiderman and Punisher, between Spiderman and Dewolff, Black Widow and Spiderman, the Staten Island references etc. I think we needed the montage at the beginning to be this whole movie. Seeing Spiderman operate on his own to become this beloved hero of New York after taking down Scorpion, Tombstone, The Hand etc. Then the sequel has him reconnecting with MJ and Ned, teaming up with The Punisher and The Hulk (maybe even throw Daredevil in the mix) and introducing Jean Grey. Seeing that tank chase scene and Punisher suddenly rocks up and you see them interact with this familiarity and banter when it's really the first time they're on screen together - felt like a scene that should be 1 hour into a movie, but viewers are thrown into the deep end and expected to keep up

Movie also didn't feel like it had a clear villain, kinda makes the movie feel like nothing was really accomplished. The story ends up painting Jean in a sympathetic light, Bill/The Department of Damage Control ends up being the bad guys but they don't really face any consequences after the end of this movie iirc. Black Widow is now looking into them, that's it. Also the whole arachnid DNA thing instantly being resolved by Peter accepting being both Peter Parker and Spiderman makes him the best version of himself is super simple imo

It feels like people wanted a new beginning for Spiderman and they had the sauce right there with the montage - make something like that into a 2 hour film, separate Spiderman from the Iron Boy narrative and do a self contained story. Instead we got The Hulk, Punisher and Spiderman interacting for the first time, the first member of the X-Men introduced here, seems like the Department of Damage Control want to build something like Xavier's cerebro device, Peter's inhibitor is probably going to play a role when it comes to the X-Men. This movie feels like it's mainly a piece in the greater MCU puzzle rather than its own thing and that's been the usual trend with these Spiderman movies

  • was punisher ever goofy like this in the comics?
