A friend told me about the current crisis in Bangladesh with students protesting against the corrupt government. The state was planning to implement a quota system of 30% for goverment jobs. The jobs are reserved for family members of veterans who fought for the country’s independence from Pakistan in 1971. So as far as I understand, it's pretty much nepotism. A further 26 percent of jobs are allocated to women, disabled people and ethnic minorities. This leaves about 3,000 positions for which 400,000 graduates compete in the civil services exam.

At least 40 people dead and 25000 are injured!

    Edit:

This thing turned into a full revolution. Prime minister resigned and fled.

Let's hope that Bangladesh can rebuild themselves in the way the students want to and no force like corrupt politicians or the military utilises this situation to profit off it.

Seems to be mixed bag because as I've heard military takeover is a possibility. But I hope they hear the voices of these protestors.

  • This thing turned out to become way bigger than it initially was. It started as a protest against the quota system but turned into an Anti-Government protest and they were not ready to stop until Prima Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned. She did this yesterday and fled to India. Apparently trying to go to London.

There was already a lot of accusations about her trying to form a one-party state.

Around 300 people have been killed, including at least 32 children, and thousands more have been injured since the protests began, with almost 100 people killed on Sunday alone.

On Sunday, the government declared an indefinite nationwide curfew starting at 6 p.m. as well as a three-day holiday, to begin Monday, to try to maintain order. However, that didn't stop the protesters at all and she had to resign yesterday.

I put some links in the OP post.

  • so far I have no reason to be overly pessimistic. the parliament has been dissolved, right-wing figures in the military are actively being purged and replaced.

    trust the process.
