I think his general style is much more suited to slower and more methodical s*** like Dune and Blade Runner

he likes to play things very straight faced which works great for the stuff he's done but he lacks some of the more bizarre and surrealist sensibilities needed for something like Matrix

also action sequences aren't really his strong suit either, not that he's bad at them, it's just not one of his primary strengths

Hmm fair enough. I disagree as I feel the fighting choreography in Dune is wayy better than matrix 4, its also something where they just hire the right choreographer, but I hear you. Different vibe forsure, but I think if Denis wanted to he could give Matrix a new feel that is great in its own right.
