I remember when it 1st came out everyone was saying Kanye had the best verse bc he hadn’t rapped like that in a while. I was a teenager and agreed. A lot of twitter even said Kdot’s verse was boring or BAD.

But listening now it shows the limits of Ye’s writing. Kendrick, a master lyricist, paints a picture of LA (middle finger pedestrians, R&B singers and lesbians) and his WHOLE verse sticks to this topic making you visualize the STORY in 2ND person like he’a actually talking to a girl who is cheating on her man out in LA with vain hopes that a lot of people go to the land of entertainment for and starts hoeing herself out. Everyone can RELATE to that or knows someone that went to LA to chase something or heard that it goes on. On top of that he switches cadences multiple times especially in the part with multisyllabic rhymes that I even think is above Ye’s range of vocab (gratuity, consumer streets). And he can still do punchlines like Ye but I actually think his would bw more effective in getting a crowd to yell at a concert (the head still good though/Instagram is the beat way to promote some p****)

Ye just has punch lines and there are duds in some places that I wish he found a different way to say it smoother like when he says “…since Lauryn Hill retired. And 3 Stacks man” it sounds awkward. Even worse when he says “ But don't worry, this one's so jammin. You know it, L.A., it's so jammin'. His flow is more straightforward and headboppy which is why people thought he washed Kendrick but it shows. And his topics are all over the place compared to Kendrick’s conversation with the girl which isn’t bad I’m just saying it takes a higher tier lyricist to do what Kendrick does in making concise concept songs and albums.

No one got washed on this song but Yesexuals were at an all time high when it dropped

  • Jul 23, 2024

charisma/quotables are a skill in the same way that having a technical verse that tells a good story is

that being said outside of his absolute best best verses ye is just not on kendricks level as a rapper

  • Jul 23, 2024

    No

  • One of Kendrick’s weaker verses against one of Kanye’s better ones. Kendrick seemed to get eaten up by the beat, like he couldn’t find the right flow. Modern day Kendrick would kill it.

Let me rephrase: it exposes a ceiling in Ye's lyricism* but I don't think Kendrick could PERFORM like Ye did either. Blatantly shows 2 different types of rap: a CRAFTSMAN that can approach a topic from any viewpoint (Kdot) vs an EMCEE who could hype up a party (Ye)
