  • Jul 4, 2024

    We’re finally here. 8:30 showing.

I remember seeing Pearl opening weekend and immediately watching X right after. Been a pretty long for the finale, but it’s here.

    NEW VISION

    what genre it is?

Horror slasher type. Not supernatural but creepy psychopath killer stuff

First one is set in the 70s and is about creepy old husband and wife on a farm who try to kill people shooting p*** in their barn

Second is set in the early 1900s and is about a young woman who wants to be an old timey movie star and turns evil

New one is set in the 80s and is about a character from the first one who goes to Hollywood to become an actor but ends up involved with the night stalker serial killer

Maxxxine is a great entry into the X trilogy that is able to successfully build upon the themes set in the previous two entries. While it is less a horror film and more of a thriller, this film is still a success. Mia Goth turns in another great performance as Maxine Minx and she is surrounded by a great supporting cast that includes a mesmerizing Kevin Bacon performance. Maxxxine is able to pay off much of what is set up in X while also being a distinct film on its own. The best thing I feel that Ti West was able to accomplish with this trilogy is that he was able to make three totally distinct films that all build upon each other. Whatever he has coming next, I will be in line for it.

Maxxxine is probably my least favorite of the trilogy but that’s not without saying that even then, it’s still a solid and creative film. It leans fully into the 80s cheese and it’s so awesome how all the movies embrace the time period it’s set in, not only in pop culture but movies itself. I think anyone going in expecting a similar tone across either films before it will be in for disappointment. Where I think there’s faults is the unevenness of the first two acts, it feels like it’s jumping from one place to another without really letting any ambience buildup, but once it hits the third act it goes into full drive and before you know it, it’s wrapping up. There’s also some storylines that don’t really get resolved by the end and that’s always a peeve, same with the use of flashbacks to earlier scenes that weren’t long ago. I think Mia Goth had a more shining presence in Pearl but she still brings a lot to the character of Maxine, much more than X I’d say. And while there’s lots of big names in the cast, the one that gets to deliver the most is easily Kevin Bacon, really fun to see him play it up in something like this when he’s mostly done subdued performances in his later years. But really all the other characters aside from Maxine and KB’s feel very underdeveloped to the point the looming danger or emotional impact is barely felt. I had seen that West wants to continue adding films to this series, but I can’t really see where it could go next as it has a decent ending that put a nice bow on top of it. And perhaps it’d be for the best to stop since it feels the series creatively peaked with Pearl. But for both Mia Goth and Ti West, I’ll definitely not miss what they deliver next outside of this franchise. All I can hope is it’s better then this film.

this was really disappointing. first 2 in the series were so memorable and this one really did nothing special. while it wasnt bad, it really did nothing for the overall arc of the character or trilogy. ruined what couldve been an all time classic trilogy for me

unfortunately this is kind of where i’m at, Mia did her thing but this movie didn’t really expand on her character at all and the story left a lot to be desired. Some of the flashback scenes were pointing out stuff that was extremely obvious and the third act was pretty predictable. Loved all the side characters tho especially Elizabeth Debicki and Moses Sumney. not a bad movie but imo the weakest

Was decidedly mediocre in general tbh.

Kind of a fun experience to watch with a crowd and Mia Goth was great, plus the movie LOOKED fantastic.

But good God was it predictable, and most of the side characters felt incredibly vapid.

In general, outside of the visuals, the film feels very flimsy in almost every respect.

Also that ending felt hokey as all hell. Like they pushed over the top way way over the top and straight into the f***ing ground.

The ending should have just been pure comedy given how far they were pushing the absurdity.

It was legitimately ridiculous how much it was bordering it but still seemed to actively refuse to completely tip over the edge; made the entire experience of the finale frustrating.

Like for real, I fully thought her dad at some point was gonna say something along the lines of, “Cut! Was that good? Should we go again? I don’t know, I wasn’t really feeling that one.” then cut to the cult boom mic operator shrugging his shoulders.

It felt like the movie was veering into THAT kind of territory by that point.

seeing a lot of the same complaints that a bunch of thin plotlines bloat the film and dont end up getting resolved in a way that lands. sad

It’s a B movie ass B movie that looks like a an A movie but is aware that it’s a B movie but doesn’t succeed in being anything but a B movie even though it’s clearly supposed to be a B movie that’s more than a B movie.

It’s the most B ass AB movie I’ve seen in a minute.

it was trying to be too many different things at once. a detective mystery, a slasher, a movie about making movies and none of it felt fully fleshed out
