Ben Davis has done a number of MCU films including Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy. Strange and Guardians were both lauded for their visuals from what I recall.

He's also been DP for Martin McDonagh (Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards), Clint Eastwood (Cry Macho), and Matthew Vaughn (Stardust, Kick Ass, Layer Cake).

I think the problem is just that these films are corporate cinema. They are very samey and uniform and safe. That have a formula and are sticking to it. Even minor breaks from it are lauded. I think they're fine for what they are.

Ang Lee was maybe the most ambitious director yet in making a mainstream comic book movie with Hulk (2003). It was very comic-like in its composition and editing with picture-in-picture and split panels and such. There are still better MCU films. I definitely prefer Winter Soldier to it for just being a dumb 1990s spy thriller. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man is still the gold standard though. That trilogy fell apart the moment the studio intervened and forced the third to be a bloated mess.

Also, Zach Snyder movies look like dogshit.

Lbr tho, does Ben Davis’ work on his MCU films look as good as his films like Layer Cake or Three Billboards?

Snyders visual aesthetic has so much more style and creativity than the MCU

and frankly more than most of what comes out of Hollywood these days.

It’s so many franchises and films way worse than even the most mid MCU films that the most common MCU criticisms apply to...yet the hate isn’t as passionate? We can pretend like the filmmaking itself has no bearing on how we perceive the merit of films, but it’s not true

So there's no soul the MCU when its godfather is one of the most passionate people ever about his work and in his love and respect towards the source material? Lets also not about the huge risk they took with the idea of building a series of interconnected movies led by B, C and D tier characters focusing on slow world building (for over 10 years) and culminating in one single large event.

I blame the MCU for why the quality of most of what is made is lazy

the MCU has set a formula that others are just copying

Nobody wants to do original and ambitious projects like LOTR, The Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, anymore

Its just about taking a loved franchise and making it as safe and generic as possible in the hopes of establishing a cinematic universe someday.

No the original post was me replying to one user who said that the MCU has 0 risk or heart in them. He definitely was not talking about only the cinematography in his post.
