Mean Girls (2024)
We’re hitting the point where remakes of movies from my childhood are being made, and it feels weird. Now Mean Girls isn’t a straight up remake, but an adaptation of the Broadway adaptation. I think it mostly works. The casting is great and the updates that are made to make the story current fit right in. I’ve seen the show on Broadway before so I’m familiar with the songs and some of them are good.
This isn’t a home run though. They speed through the first two acts of the plot incredibly fast. Cady becomes friends with Janice and Damian the instant she meets them and it’s jarring. Other important plot elements are sped through for the sake of getting to the musical numbers and that sacrifice hurts the flow of the movie. Also, not everyone’s singing was up to par, especially Angourie Rice’s (I like her as an actress). The numbers done by Reneé Rapp and Auliʻi Cravalho were great because they are great singers and have done musicals in the past. But, the majority of the musical numbers just feel like music videos stuck in the middle of the movie. It didn’t feel natural unlike other movie musicals (Wonka recently comes to mind).
The core plot still works in todays day and age, Reneé Rapp made for an incredible Regina George (she was not in the cast when I saw this on Broadway), and the important side characters worked. This film brings just enough new elements to the table to where it didn’t feel like a complete rehash, but you can tell it was made for the nostalgia points. With this also originally being made for Paramount+, it feels like a streaming movie at times. With that being said, I do like when they played with the aspect ratio.
If you’re a fan of Mean Girls, I think you’ll get a kick out of this one. It does enough different to where it doesn’t feel like a shot for shot remake. If you are going into this movie with no familiarity to what Mean Girls is, just watch the original.
3/5
Studios market your musical as musical to avoid backlash challenge
I was on the fence about watching but this might’ve made me decide to watch beekeeper instead
well you just did sir
Movie was low key fire. Didn’t even know it was gonna be a musical lol but also I was high af with this shawty
Just saw it
Not a fan
Imagine the original mean girls. With much worse cast for every single character. All the same jokes told again but with worse delivery. A musical number after every major event (not a single good one). And a rushed plot to fit in the music.
They could never replicate his swag...
Hope Tina Fey at least got a bag for this monstrosity.

I haven’t investigated this really but I’ve been told she potentially she has the donk to go with the b****
