i don’t have the knowledge of that on hand and i can’t Google s*** rn but i just hate them man. i just feel like we as a society could be discussing art in a better, less capitalist and less ignorant way if we just changed the way we spoke about a lot of this stuff and i think one of the first steps for that is numerically stop scoring art in general. like you said earlier it’s just so empty and people pay attention to it when they shouldn’t

lists and ranks are fine, because that’s just saying “hey these my albums of the year in order of how much i f***ed w them”. It’s not giving some kind of numerical score to the the album itself

if we're just talking about the responsibility of the publication, i think the job is done when they have words to go with the score. i've seen the word objective used in here multiple times and i've never seen it as that. how can i, when there's 1,000 publications all giving different scores? lol. the public makes something to be mad about, not the publication. they're just giving opinions. same with 1-5 stars in movies, restaurants, etc.

I disagree with your framework entirely. One you apparently don't even understand having just said Gunna didn't serve time.

Famous people are embroiled in legal trouble all the time. You can be president and do that stuff. I never heard of the 1975 guy until he started being racist or whatever. Same with Zach Bryan the thug who fights cops.

I may be biased as Matt Healey comes from TV royalty, but not hearing about him until this year is a you issue

This is a fair assessment, but I feel like saying “this is not for me” is just a nicer way of saying something is bad. But then again, I think when someone is saying something is good or bad, it should be understood that they’re saying that it’s good or bad to them, not that’s it’s good or bad as some objective fact.

Obviously music can’t objectively be good or bad, but to an individual person it definitely can be because people have different tastes and likes and interests in what they look for in music

i don’t necessarily think you’re wrong, but unfortunately I don’t think that’s actually how s*** works in reality for most people. I think it’s OK to say “this is bad to me” but I think because of the breakdown of people not clarifying that “this is entirely my opinion” is causing a lot of people at least from what I have seen on the Internet and in real life to actually perceive some of this discourse as others trying to say that the music they like is objectively s***, And in turn people thinking that They are right to/they can actually say that. I think if we all just clarified things were our opinion more often we could communicate these things a little clearer and with a little more nuance. If you’re with your Homies and they already understand that anything you say is just your opinion then that’s different, you can say something is s*** all you want and they’d get you even if they disagree and have their own opinion. But some other people might take that as you calling what they love s***, and people don’t react well to that

I mean let me put it to you this way. I’ve seen many Fantano videos and in his videos he basically amorphously and amusically talks about music And expresses his opinion in a way that sounds like he is describing something factually and objectively. He puts that s*** in his descriptions, sure, but people still don’t interpret it that way. People sit there in the comments and act like he’s wrong Or hurt that he shat on what they like. I don’t think the fact that all of this is just opinion and completely non-objective is clear enough to a lot of people from what I can see. Y’all know this is just my opinion right? Lmfao

My favourite film has an 8.1 rating by 168 critics. I haven't read a single review. Is it still my favourite? Yes. Will reading their reviews change it? No

    So I don't care

I feel like art criticism is a genre in itself*, and it's one I'm not interested in, so I leave it

*similar to opinion editorials / essays

  • shaleirose

I get what you’re saying, I agree that there can be ambiguity in art. I’m just saying that in general that’s not the case. Especially in music, with most artists it’s pretty clear what they’re setting out to do with an album

    Completely agree with this!

when it comes to a restaurant there are different things at risk for that. You have to go out to a restaurant, they could have f***ed up spoiled food, s*** like that. There is more of an objective quality to it, and I see the reasoning for putting a quick star rating. But that reasoning doesn’t really apply to music, especially This day and age where you don’t need to go out and buy a record To experience it for yourself. that’s all I’m saying. If it’s specifically review for a vinyl record and the quality of it, see that’s an objective standard, you feel me?

I’m not necessarily saying the responsibility is on anyone in particular, I think we all can benefit from talking about this

But I feel like the job of the reviewer is to speak about their opinion in a confident, matter-of-fact way. It’s like in grade school when they teach you in essays never to write the words “I think” or “I believe” because it should be understood and implied that the opinions and ideas expressed in the essay are the opinions of the writer

They’re arguably the most popular British band on the planet right now. Have been on a sold out worldwide arena tour for the past year. And have been famous for over a decade now.
