I think it just gives people a numerical idea of whether something is worth their time and money or not. Most consumers of art are of a casual audience, they just want a recommendation, not a dissertation

Well yeah, it's the same reason short form content is so popular these days, it's shorter so people can get the info they want faster. In this case an authority's verdict on an album
I think you have a point here. I can see how giving a score to an album would cause someone to just want to read the score and move onto something else as opposed to read someone's actual well thought out review. another reason why I hate scores

I agree with that. The sad reality though, is that we live in a capitalistic society that has turned art into product and made it unattainable to experience without purchase. Therefore, reviews have become an integral part of that system in recommending to consumers what is or isn’t worth their dollar
