saw this last night and I. F***ING. LOVED. IT. it's controversial and a lot of people hated it and walked out on its Cannes premiere but it totally worked for me and I think KTT would like this kind of movie.
synopsis: Bacurau, a small town in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants notice that their community has vanished from most maps.
try to go into it blind without reading more or seeing a trailer. I could add more detail at what this movie is influenced by and what makes it so special but that would give too much away.
the movie does an amazing job switching tones and the cast is really good. there were a few parts that didn't work for me but this was the best movie I've seen in a while and more people need to check it out. it earned the top spot on Letterboxd's Top films of 2020 (domestic release last year, international release this year)

Sounds fire, wonder why its controversial
don't want to give too much away but there's violence and a change of tone that were too much for some people.
can't get the f***ing spoiler tags to work so I'll leave it at that

Every time I hear about a movie screening at Cannes it's how people walked out.

People soft and overdramatic as hell. Ain't nothing in this movie worth walking out over.
saw it at tiff last year, great film. dont understand people walking out unless they cant handle light gore
Best brazilian film in a very long time.
And for me, as a brazilian, best film of 2019.

Having a brief intro on how this was influenced by political unrest in south america helped form my opinion.
I loved it, the absolute switches in tone really made you hone in and notice all the subtle acting nuances.
Having seen movies before with bloodthirsty soldiers & having read about some real ones made this story wholey believable.
Saw the trailer and thought it was meh but I'll give it a try cause I trust KTT critics.
first half is strange
yeah but overall it kinda felt amateurish imo, idk why
I think the cinematography was very bad aswell, mightve been why

I've heard a few people didn't like this film much and I'm curious as to why or if they can nail down what didn't work for them.
imo, the first half did a great job humanizing the town, its people, and their culture which made the payoff in the second half more rewarding. it was almost like two different films in a way but the tone shift worked for me in part because the townspeople were waking up to the situation along with the viewer.
The cinematography was pretty good as I remember. there were a few beautiful shots and I was never distracted by it, besides certain nods to movies they were influenced by. might post some screenshots up later
wouldn't call this film amateur though, unless maybe you're talking about some of the local actors they used. the directors and cinematographer have spent many years making films in Brazil.
