  • This is the never-before-told story of the musical revolution that happened right under the nose of the Reagan Eighties--when a small but sprawling network of bands, labels, fanzines, radio stations, and other subversives reenergized American rock with punk rock's do-it-yourself credo and created music that was deeply personal, often brilliant, always challenging, and immensely influential. This sweeping chronicle of music, politics, d****, fear, loathing, and faith has been recognized as an indie rock classic in its own right.

Among the bands profiled: Mission of Burma, Butthole Surfers, The Minutemen, Sonic Youth, Black Flag, Big Black, Hüsker Dü, Fugazi, Minor Threat, Mudhoney, The Replacements, Beat Happening, and Dinosaur Jr.

Wassup y'all Danny G from Birmingham here this book been living in my head rentfree since I've read it Azerrad takes you on a nice adventure throughout the years interweaves these stories beautifully anyway I thought let's make an appreciation thread for it talk about it a lil your favorite chapters? Mine are Butthole Surfers (don't judge a book by its cover, or a band by its name), Fugazi, Sonic Youth, The Replacements & Black Flag.

Good book, bought it forever ago for the Big Black, Black Flag and Replacements chapters. Still not the biggest Mudhoney fan but whatever.

Few months back I got a email about Mudhoney playing in a 500 cap venue in November and I thought huh, how about that! Still kicking!

Oh yeah, I’m sure they’ll stay together until one of the two guitarists retires or dies. Have you ever seen that Cameron Crowe movie Singles? Matt Dillon plays a grunge singer whose big song is “Touch Me, I’m D***”.

Love the story about Steve Albini talking one of the Meat Puppets into pretending he had a gun in his jacket to get the rest of their show money from a shady promoter.

It’s a corny rom-com but it’s fun. Decent cast. Prez from The Wire is randomly in it, and Eric Stolz plays a mime.
