If expecting him to name the black people he called n1ggers in his apology then specifically note how triggering that was for them and say sorry is ignorant and problematic to people with tourettes then

yeah that isn't really gonna do s*** for him. should've mentioned them by name and spoken to the specific group of people that his tic was (unintentionally) aimed at.

The thing is, the Tourette's awareness groups collectively lives by never apologizing for their disability that they can't control. If he has to mention MBJ and Lindo without apologizing, how would he do that? He can only speak for himself and keep telling people that his tics are involuntary and he done that his whole life who were hurt by his comments.

I’ve read that Davidson doesn’t apologize for his involuntary tics, because it’s something he cannot control. The logic is that one shouldn’t apologize for something they have no personal control over. It forces them into a cycle of continuous appeasement and creates the feeling of being burdensome on others, for having to apologize due to an uncontrollable condition. What he does is stress that he does not agree or believe anything he might be shouting, and hopes that others can understand. So I can see why the apology isn’t really an apology.

But I hope he makes amends with Jordan and Lindo privately, as his involuntary actions did cause direct harm to both.

because whether or not it was in his control it's still something that he did and the pain he caused was real

nah im so over these type of movies that are basically just able bodied people patting themselves on the back for being so open to people that are different than them

The express purpose of the film is to raise awareness of a condition that it's evident a lot of people don't understand, it's not a case of 'Wow, the guy in a wheelchair is... A PERSON?', the guy's the protagonist, it's got a filmic narrative based on his life, but it also works as a crash course on how Tourettes with coprolalia works, it's by far the highest-profile movie ever done on the subject

I've seen movies like the ones you're talking about, there's one where Emilia Clarke falls in love with a wheelchair-bound guy that's absolutely disgusting on a moral level, but this movie's a very different thing

Why would he be sorry for something outside of his control

This is very clearly the narrative he’s trying to work against

Even the black actor w Tourette’s in the movie did not make any attempt to explain the dudes actions in his own statement

    Interesting moral question

Is it okay to make disabled people apologize for their disability?

You must understand that even if saying it was outside his control putting himself in a situation to say something deeply offensive was

i said this in another post but

i think when something you've said has become a breaching point into (clearly, lol, look at some of these takes) a lot of peoples first look into how tourettes can affect you and hurt others, it wouldn't undo any of his advocacy to say sorry + explain that the condition intrinsically makes him say slurs, hateful things, offensive things, shocking things and things he does not believe.

i admire all the work he has done, think its all important and good, saying sorry this one time would probably go a long way. it doesn't need to be an admission of racism or some sort of acknowledgement that he is racism, but just explain how tourettes works.

maybe it doesnt need to be him saying sorry but making amends, explaining, offering grace to the hurt community etc

i was making better defences than him i still stand by all that i said and the nature of defending people with tourettes from the words they say and the context (or lack thereof) in which the say them, but yeah he struck out with this one

he shouldnt have to apologise for being disabled but kinda making it about himself and not even saying their names...

this is getting too messy for me
