What about WLR do you think is completely divorced from what is happening in the mainstream?

    You can’t be serious

  • Yeezus actually had merits to it.

WLR does not not even comparable

WLR is its own thing in that he took stuff that was already a thing in rap and turned them up to 11 while also making it palatable for the masses to an extent.

I think 808s and yeezus both fit that description too

I see the difference between carti and kanye as this: carti is advancing and experimenting with a sound that is his while Ye experimented with sounds that were already popular and established.

Im not seeing what carti did wit WLR in rap a lot, unless you point to it just being ‘loud’ but thats a shallow comparison

Ok then i cant do nothing for you

  • MrKiD

    Actually before

Cudi dropped AKNC on July 17, 2008. That was a couple months before 808s came into fruition. Plus Kanye was at his mixtape party.

True and i agree Cudi helped form the 808s sound but i don't think that should take any credit away from Kanye. Rappers themselves have admitted how much influence he had on them with that album.

Cudi and Kanye both deserve credit for others writing more personal lyrics

  • UIP

you were wrong from the first statement lmfao

    Yea i forgot about AKNC

It is grittier than his other work, yes, but it still features his signature beat selection and is produced by the same people who worked on Die Lit, as well as F1lthy, who isn't exactly some experimental/underground figure given that he's worked with Bladee, AJ Tracey, and Lil Yacthy.

WLR is really not that far away from current trap music. Still a v good album though

I hear a lot of future, thug, and keed in his delivery and vocal inflections on this album and the production is like an amalgamation of a lot of different styles that were bubbling.

I don’t think Carti reinvented the wheel but he was willing to take stuff further where no other artist at his level was.

Like when Yeezus dropped nobody was rapping like ye was over TNGHT, Arca, and daft punk production.

See, you tb inflections while im talkin bout music trends and sounds. Thug Future and Carti from the same city, be around the same people, and even work together so they gonna pronounce some words the same.

Ye rappin over Arca production was cool but that’s part of my point, a lot of the experimental s*** people praise Yeezus for was already very popular online(DG fans hated ye for this).

I didnt just mention the vocals. I mentioned the music too lol. U acting like WOD and alot of the other producers on this album besides maybe art dealer aren't popular online.

And the Death grips s*** was always a weak and shallow comp for yeezus.

Yeezus and WLR are not experimental albums by any definition

The reception can't even be compared rn because critics haven't started reviewing WLR. We do know Yeezus was very much praised though.

Also, it doesn't make sense to say Yeezus wasn't innovative because Death Grips existed beforehand, but act like Carti dialing his sound up to 150% is completely singular and that he isn't a product of pioneers like Future and Thug

I find it wild some fans are acting like this is a never-seen-before, game-changing work just bc Twitter called it trash

I would say it’s far different from mainstream trap, but yea it definitely borrows a lot from the underground scenes

You only mentioned vocals and delivery, which is considering all them artists from the same coty and be around each other, this aint a Fetty Wap situation.

Not sure where you going wit WoD but they just producers as far as i know, Arca was a recording artist that was getting a lot of attention the year before yeezus

Imma leave u wit this Yeezus wish it could be NLDW

You started off wrong when you rested reception solely in the hands of critics lol

People comparing the reception based on fan reaction alone

A lot of people get hung up on this point but to break it down further Ye vs Carti could be looked at internal bs external innovation, internal meaning experimenting with your own sound and external being experimenting with a sound(thats a clear breakaway from the one you’ve established) others have pioneered and established.

People tend to value the former more than the later.

Even you acknowledge the difference between Carti being the product of his peers and a whole band pushing a sound before its used by a bigger artist.

Innovation doesnt happen in a vacuum but there’s def differences of how it comes about

Oh yea mb, i agree the production is a culmination of everything hot coming from ATL rn

  • Dec 29, 2020

even if this album were experimental or pushing anything forward who would be responsible for that. does carti actually care like that. he has no production credits on the album right. kind of a general question for any album that is deemed to be pivotal and then that always getting attributed to the artist's innovation alone by most people.
