I feel like it is harder for TV shows and movies to be ahead of their time now because they take more ideas from current events and Twitter topics rather than looking ahead. We have been kinda hitting the same social topics for a while or the hot topics online get included in shows very quickly. When they incorporate future/sci-fi topics it will take forever for that stuff to be invented. So it does not reflect our society. I guess we will see how these modern shows age.
Shows that I think were ahead of it’s time
Daria
Freaks and Geeks
Downtown
Person of interest
Icarly
We can’t truly know if something is ahead of it’s time until we can reflect on it in the future imo
Daria i like freaks n geeks never watched the rest, care to explain icarly being ahead of its time Miranda cosgrove dope for school of rock anyways

I felt like the premise of her having a web show in 2007 is kinda ahead of its time. She was basically a Twitch streamer.

Oh yeah good point
Daria and Freaks & Geeks are incredibly of-their-time
Think so, freaks and geeks had an Intersex character and it was written pretty good for todays standards and Daria parents kinda flipped the workaholic dad for the mom kinda giving like Jerry and Beth vibes from Rick and Morty.

I mean aspects of it were definitely progressive for their time! But “women can be the breadwinners too!” was a huge thing in the 90s
And the post-AIDS art scene/the heyday of true indie cinema had gotten the ball rolling on portrayals of queer or genderfluid characters beyond a cis gay or lesbian best friend. It had already touched the mainstream (not like today, but the progress had begun). For example, consider that Boys Don’t Cry came out the year as Freaks premiered and was racked up several Oscar noms

Ah I see, good points. Daria also had Jodie. Her character described how hard it is to maintain image of the perfect black student at a white school. Something that could have been easily overlook when writing her character.
Perfect Blue might become even more prescient soon with the way ai is going. We'll be going to some strange places when tech that powerful starts really intersecting with stan culture and parasocial relationships. We're already seeing it right now on a geopolitical level.
