my mom and I recently moved into an apartment in Richmond Virginia. Unfortunately, we haven’t been given a mailbox key, there are roaches, and we feel like we’ve been misled by the landlord. The landlord won’t respond either.
The problem is, my mom thinks both of us filing for bankruptcy could help us get out of the lease. My mom is going to file bankruptcy anyway and it’s going to cause the leasing agency to come after me.
But here’s the thing: I’ve worked incredibly hard since I turned 18 to build up my credit score, which currently sits at a solid 730. I have high credit limits, and I’m determined to maintain my good standing. Whereas my mom on the other hand has a score in the 400s and has filed bankruptcy multiple times.
Get a lawyer and file suit against the landlord
Like a lease lawyer?
Yeah something like that. It sounds like based on what you posted in OP you already have way more than enough to pursuit suit and break the lease easily. Just try to get documentation of everything possible beforehand (ex pictures of the roaches, screenshots of the texts with him not responding, etc) since landlords will typically try to cover tracks after litigation is pushed on them

Everything is documented. My mom and I have sent emails and text messages. I also sent a certified letter asking to be removed from the lease. I’m going to tell her about a lease lawyer hopefully they aren’t expensive.
your mom sounds dramatic asf. you don’t have to do allat to get out of a lease.
We haven’t paid the rent for July yet since we can’t access our paychecks in the mailbox. Now they added on late fees and sent a email through another company demanding payment and threatening eviction.
In on an @OAK thread

Honestly, if you have enough documentation, some might take the case pro bono (only taking money after the case is settled). Shop around for some in your area. Good luck btw, had to deal with a s***ty landlord for the past few years only just recently getting out, so I know how difficult it is
I knew this was Oak or whatever
I was having a bad day but this thread reminds me it can be much worse

Yes. Hopefully OP can figure it out.

Thank you. I definitely don’t want them to come after me with a judgment I didn’t even know my mom was thinking about bankruptcy
Maybe if you weren’t a complete f***ing idiot and stopped paying for two apartments at once (one of which you drive an hour and a half both ways to spend two nights a week at) you wouldn’t be in this position.
Really don’t have any sympathy for you when you clearly have plenty of money and are just beyond ed
The bmw was covered by my insurance and I only had it for a few weeks I didn’t pay for that lol

1. I have been relying on financial aid and my credit card to pay my rent at my apartment on campus.
2. I know it’s a bad idea but driving a hour and a half to school everyday would kill my car.
