What I mean is moments when you realized that songs you love had a lot more substance than you initially interpreted.
For example, Yeezus and Born Sinner came out when I was 14.
I remember sitting in the car on the way to somewhere with my fam and I was listening to the song Chaining Day by Cole (this was around 2015/16) and while listening to the song it finally clicked for me. I never fully understood what he was trying to say but it finally made sense.
It wasn’t about until 2 years ago maybe even more recent that I understood what Kanye was talking about in New Slaves. I used to love rapping the Hamptons house part back in high school cuz I love around mad spoiled kids who have Hampton houses but I never really understood that it was a diss towards private prison owners and neither did these white girls singing it too
Also I know this might sound dumb to some of you but I didn’t learn English until I was 9-10 and having not grown up in a hood in America it took me a while to understand nuances in rap discussing systemic oppression and things like that.
Lmao facts op. I had this exact moment when What I mean is moments when you realized that songs you love had a lot more substance than you initially interpreted.
