I'm guessing games today take much longer to make than games did back then.
Look at Naughty Dog for example. the first 3 uncharted games all came out inbetween 5 years.
Meanwhile,
Last of us - 2013
Uncharted 4 - 2016
Last of us 2 - 2020.
Now a days Naughty Dog needs about 3-4 years to be to release new games.It takes time, I'm sure game companies would release their games faster if they could.

With the crunch they had around RDR2 with that many years in development I can’t imagine how tough it was for employees back when they was dropping a game every year
