So after this past weekend + yesterdays awful shooting, I’ve become pretty f***ing sick or misinformation on the internet, moreso than I already was.

I wanted to get ahead of this before they were posted on here. Stopping misinformation should be a priority for all tech companies at this point

There’s a social media post going around claiming the rumored “Epstein docs” have been released today. While they are expected to release at some point in the future: the documents currently circulating for from 2019, NOT anything new

…the documents shared on Twitter are not an early release of these unsealed papers.

The papers currently online were released in 2019. They are unsealed from a lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre against Epstein's fixer Ghislaine Maxwell. It was filed in the Southern District of New York federal court in 2015

As reported by the Mail, while the soon-to-be-released documents are from the same suit, they are not yet publicly available.

For reference here’s the original social media post, from a paid blue check mark, of course. Again, these are from 2019 and nothing new.

this is more of a comment on how misinformation can easily be spread. however, it does matter in the sense that it is misinformation spreading once again -

the documents the tweet is TRYING to refer to are supposed unsealed documents that have yet to be released

however, the documents they posted are nothing knew, and have been around since at least 2019.

while the information isn’t new, the claim that these are the upcoming unsealed documents, and the resulting postings from people over the internet claiming it as such just based on this tweet, truly exemplifies how insanely harmful misinformation has the potential to be.

there are other implications to this as well, i’ve seen a lot people posting “the MSU shooting was to distract you from this! that’s why the media isn’t reporting on its” when in fact, they aren’t reporting on it because it’s old news

it just empowers weird conspiracy theorists, who are already vulnerable to being indoctrinated to weird ideologies.
