    Hospitality

    Seems pretty useless

In hospitality you rise up as you get more experience.

When I used to work in catering venue, I knew a guy that was finishing up his hospitality degree. I thought that was just waste of time.

allegedly cornells hotel school grads do the best outta college

i dont think any degree is useless unless you truly made it a point to learn nothing

but it goes without saying that different degrees potentially open doors to different job/career opportunities which may pay differently

and different degrees may have a different price tag associated with obtaining that degree

while i think the notion of simply studying what you love surrounded bu other people studying the same thing is nice, i dont think thats a realistic goal that everyone can have. a lot of people need to consider what has the best financial return given the least amt of time/money inputted

degrees like psychology or biology are sort of useless rly if you dont go for at least a masters or phd

the conception of education as motivated by profit seems like a modern, neoliberal one. I think it's good to take a step back and consider what is the purpose of education. If you have a certain career in mind then that's great, but sometimes even knowing what you want to be requires education in the first place

we are talking about degrees given out by institutions, from my perspective its these ivy league universities that make education motivated by profit in the very first place with 6 figure certs, and they by no means come from a modern, neoliberal school of thinking
so to put it like its the person who pursuing a degree is at fault for having financial expectations isnt right,

you think there would be this much pressure to make a decent salary right away if universities werent driven by greed from the beginning?

    Not everything is about money

Tell that to your kids going to public school getting their asses beat for always bringing noodles for lunch

anyone with a brain would know there are degrees with less worth.
The question is are you willing to learn skills/ make connections that will enhance your "worthless" degree before you graduate? Or are you going to just be a clock in clock out type person in college and expect a good job after college?

Ideally you should be able to go to school for free and learn whatever but that’s not real so i’ll always recommend people do stem instead of anything else

graphic design — I did it and got 5+ years experience working in it but I can't recommend and I would choose something different if I could go back

    • shrinking industry, my last full time was outsourced to cheaper overseas workers (becoming easier for companies to do in digital age)
    • low pay relative to similar careers
    • very few options to develop to higher positions in a company and no rewards for growing your skills

Even if it were reduced in cost or free (which it can be) you still don't want to waste 4 years doing a degree that want get you a job.

everyone shouldn't go to college in the first place people can learn trades, military, or just go right into the workforce
