I’m leaving NY to the south tomorrow. No job and barely any money. I’m staying with a cousin and feel anxious as hell wondering if I should just stay where my family is or take this risk. Has anyone of you left your hometown and made it work? How long did it take and how did you do it?

@TwoDee moved to France in 2017 for 7 months with only money for the plane ticket

Was great, hustled my ass off

Moving to Australia next year with some money saved. Really just have to be able to hustle and take some cutbacks to get by for a while

Take the risk. You can always go back. I did easily too, so it’s worth it

You can always move back right?

And? Why travel when you can backpack/live abroad? You say that like it’s a bad thing. Have had some of the greatest experiences of my life taking advantage of the visa opportunities that exists for Americans.

Some of you niggas be 25 and can’t even call the doctor without mummy’s help.

My great great grandparents from Nigeria I grew up poor in Detroit so I definitely ain’t come from money for generations we been just getting by on what we had

I was in college in 2017 and life wasn’t cutting it, I took all the money I had to my name (something like a few thousand) and me and my girl at the time just dipped

From there I ended up in London, then back to America, then japan for 2 months and then Canada. I was bar tending and doing small jobs to sustain myself. Now I found out about this Australia work and holiday visa so next summer after I save up properly imma head down there for a few years this been in the making for a while

I know everyone can’t do it my family was devastated cuz they don’t know much outside of here but I just had to do it and it changed the way I see life

Its gonna be tough at first but once you get a job it gets easier

  • Dec 6, 2019

Can you tell me more of your story? What did you do for money in France/ aus?
Did u have a job lined up when you moved? Did you know the language? Was this straight out of school or college?

    Cliff notes
I worked while in America and since I was living w my parents and had minimal financial priorities could save without worrying about spending too much, worked for like 6 months while in school. At the end of my winter semester I copped a plane ticket to Paris and my girl and I stayed there for a while, she was studying in France and already had an apartment. I was teaching English with this company and also delivering food w this company called Foodora, basically French UberEats. Didn’t have anything lined up I just left and figured it out as I went along, had never been out the country before as it is. Got stuck in Iceland for a week before even making it there so it wasn’t just a simple journey but I didn’t let it deter me just minor inconveniences.

Australian visa only requires having 3000 usd in a bank account and let’s you live and work there for up to 3-4 years if you renew it each time. I’m in America rn and have been working for the last year in preparation for that. Don’t have anyone there so it’ll prolly be more tricky than France but i got plugs for jobs this time around

Oh ya as far as the language I only knew elementary France but after going to language school I think I was graded “A2” level which is a step above that, knowing the language wasn’t a requirement to navigate but for things like professional non English teaching jobs you prolly gonna want to know enough to do business level interactions. You should be fine tho, and good luck love to see ppl taking the leap
