At least that's how it was for me & my music friends in highschool (class of 2014). We would be up on current ish, the bubbling underground & then explore the past here & there, & talk/debate about it with one another.

I grew up on Rap from my family too, but in HS I started exploring other s*** like Indie Rock & Electronic & now a nigga love that s*** too

Wish I could go to as many concerts as i did in HS too.

Kendrick, Chance, YG, Freddie Gibbs, Pusha T, Ab-Soul & more while they were on the come up this decade

And I even saw Ice Cube & DMX lol, but was a year or two after HS.

I'm not bumping 90s hiphop 24/7, but there are some older songs/artists in Rap & other genres I'll have in rotation or mixed in a playlist. Stuff i genuinely like without any bearing on the "right" consensus.

You'll probably find at least some stuff u like, but u ain't gotta like everything. it's still just music at the end of the day.

I'm still mostly listening to my period of music tho. Mostly 2011 to 2016, with some 2000s & 90s & a lil bit of the later half of 2010s thrown in.
