Its not little guys beating big bad guys its the fall of the heroes and most of all showing how flawed the Jedi were.
The Jedi sicko,Anakin wasn't some super strong hero and Obi Wan was arrogant.
That theme of it immediatly puts it at a storytelling disadvantage
OG trilogy has the perfect story to appeal to the most people, unknown and unimportant kid becomes the savior of the galaxy and works hard to be worthy of his role as the hero + discovers true friendship and s*** like that
Prequel was more nuanced and tragic but ironically resonated more with children who only understood the underlying themes later in life

Nah these films don't appeal to kids either. Theirs been a shortage in merchandise for all franchises but this one especially Disney has been honest about not being able to sell Rey toys or Kylo ones.
This actually may be the first Star Wars era that didn't generate new fans which is why Disney is stopping the films.
They lost old fans and didn't gain new one's so the goal is to reboot in a decade.
