Well it's because of rampant anti-communist propaganda, as somebody whose family actually is from a formerly communist country (Ethiopia), communism isn't as scary of a word for us.
It wasn't either for many black Americans either, plenty of black activists and intellectuals - from Malcolm X to Fred Hampton and W.E.B. Du Bois - were communists/communist sympathizers.
Anti-communism coming from the West has always been about maintaining colonial dominance over the Third World and economic power within their own countries. If you read internal US govt documents they're actually quite frank about this.
