Genuine question, why is deep house, house etc considered “white music”? aside from the fact that it is dominated by white DJs (which sucks) lots of people white, black etc consider it white music tbh

There were so many classic deep house tracks back in the 80’s but the genre is more or less a shadow of its former self aside from those who are making it bearable.

It also begs to ask the question, will rap/hip hop ever be considered to be “not black music”?

The only genre that happened in was rock. Even though most people who research will know lil Richie. Howling wolf. James Brown. Chuck Berry. Where all the pioneers of it. While people did do some cool as s*** and created some bangers when they started doing rock

Because the US abandoned house to the underground in the 90s and 00s while it was one of the most popular forms of music in Europe during that time. Only in the late 00s did house find its way back to the US mainstream with pop crossovers like Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West, Lady Gaga leading the way and Daft Punk's Alive 2007 inspiring a dance music craze for American artists.

Oldheads like Kanye still call electronic music "European sound" in the interviews. Compare US pop music in 2002 to 2012 and you will see the massive difference from a R&B sound to an electronic sound.

Idk but would you have expected rock music to be seen as music made by white people?

But at the same time I feel like rap wouldn’t be taken away because of the fact that most non black people get mocked if they try to portray a life in their raps that isn’t true so not all want to go for it

I mean trying to look at it from a person living in the 1950s I couldn’t imagine it. But then again they wasn’t calling it rock n roll. It was straight blues and soul music. White people just took elements from soul people and groups and elements of blues and just did something cooler. I don’t see that being a thing in hip hop. Black entertainment is pop culture now and so is hip hop. The core of rap and the history behind it I just don’t see it becoming a white mans music. The storyline of HipHop and how it was created that s*** won’t vanish even if they tried to filter it out. White people are the guest in the room of this genre and always will be

Even the black late 70s early 80s musicians he cited had hella Italian and French producers. Look at a group like BB&Q Band or S.O.S. Band, two post-disco early 80s groups, and you will see European producers and writers all over the place. Guys like Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder or Jean-Michel Jarre influenced the US house pioneers just as much as the US influenced later Europeans. To say Daft Punk are culture vultures is just completely ahistorical when the article literally says Thomas' father was a disco producer.

House started as a black American invention but no genre stands in a vacuum

There are real culture vultures but seeing Daft Punk there made me a bit salty since I'm a big fan lmao

They put on underground artists like Romanthony (RIP) who werent appreciated enough in the USA at the time and re-issued his singles on their own label

Song starts with a Farrakhan sample, Roule is a Daft Punk label

it's extra strange because if you check the liner notes on Homework, they mention a s***ton of black artists and producers, some of which weren't even on the album, they were just listed as respects

yeah, that article just seemed like it had a slight grudge for some reason

One of the songs on Homework is caller Teachers and just lists their inspirations

A shout-out track, includes George Clinton and Dr. Dre amongst others

I always thought Dr. Dre was a weird influence for Daft Punk, but looking back on Homework, there was a lot more G-Funk sound than I originally remembered.

if you structured Teachers a little differently with a new drum set, it wouldn't really be out of place on a Dre album back then
