With the Runaway film being one of my favorite things Kanye has ever done in his career, you could imagine how excited I was for this. Bought tickets the day they went on sale. Unfortunately this did not have the depth nor the magic that the Runaway film or that MOST films have, period.

It wasn't BAD, per se, it just wasn't really special at all. If I wasn't a Kanye fan I would have been bored as f***. Honestly it was just a super artsy version of Sunday Service. And I mean VERY artsy. And that was the only thing I could really take from it, was that Nick Knight's direction was incredible.

The movie opens with a beautiful, almost other-worldly visual (which we never found out what it actually was) while you are listening to what I believe is Selah (haven't heard any leaks). This opening scene had me so pumped because I thought the whole film was going to be like this. If this is indeed Selah and what the album is going to sound like, I'm SUPER excited for JIK. If, instead, it sounds like any of the music that FOLLOWED Selah in the movie, he can keep the album I don't need it. And I don't think you do either.

You don't even see Kanye until 50% through the movie, and even after that he barely has a presence at all. His biggest part is what is obviously the best part of the film: the Streetlights rendition. Best Streetlights rendition I've ever heard actually, and I'm not even that big of a fan. Still not worth the price of a ticket, but great nonetheless.

The theater was pretty packed (I was in Las Vegas). I tried talking to some fellow stans there but they were incredibly awkward and didn't seem like they wanted to converse. Is this what you guys are like in real life? Please improve. I also thought I was going to be the only one there with a girlfriend who wasn't morbidly obese, but I was wrong! There were actually other girls there, and they weren't even trolls!

The experience was, in the end, a letdown. And I tried to make it positive and retain any excitement I had going in, but it was hard! What is this Jesus s*** you guys? It's a little much. All I can ask myself is "is this going to stop at any point"? Is this all there is moving forward?

That's all the info I have on the movie. I honestly don't care to write anymore about it. It was meh. Don't waste your money.

    5/10.

I can't fault you with that feeling. The best way I can describe it is like seeing a video installation in an art museum with gospel singers.

If you were a fan, there's things to like. And if you aren't a fan of Kanye, it definitely won't help you.

It did make me wish that we had Runaway in IMAX

I liked it. Definitely heavy on the artsy performance piece side that doesn’t feel as thought out as it could be (eg: narrative in MBDTF movie) but still enjoyed it. I think there are strong connections you could make to the movies structure, biblical verses, songs, and imagery.

Direction I was a little disappointed in. Color dynamic range and sharpness were lacking and its shortcomings are really exacerbated in imax. Although there are a few killer shots (street lights is def the best part of it and looks straight out of a Michael mann movie) I felt kanye could’ve stepped the game up. Shame spike jonze or mark romanek couldn’t hop in. nick knight and kanye have history together but he’s never worked on heavy duty video productions before. Turrell crater setting is very cool though.

Needed more time in the oven, it seems.

Thought it was amazing. That one shot of the mountains time lapse with Ultralight Prayer playing. Almost cried. Loved the energy the film gave off. Has way me way more hyped for the album than I was prior.
