it’s been a very exhausting rollercoaster of a year, these are the films that kept me going… i will be updating as the day goes on, happy new years.
10. The Suicide Squad
it was very disappointing to see the lack of financial appreciation for a film that serves to kick ayer’s unfortunate mess of fecal matter aside to aid in letting the audience marinate in the vibrant colorful language and characters that pop so distinctly with emotional weight & flavor, Gunn has paved his way to yet another path of comic book movie dominance if not in financial means but in means of quality.
9. Bo Burnham : Inside
transparent & raw… this filled me with trepidation about our social climate’s future even further then i had wanted while delivering amazing performances filled with great camera work, lighting, and song-writing… this is a must see and filled with constant bangers that even without even knowing at first i find myself humming.
8. Nobody
Odenkirk brings a earnest and kickass performance as Hutch a man selling himself as a normal nobody… this movie is just plain fun and i can’t speak to how much i enjoy how each fight never feels like Hutch is just too over powered or anything, he feels vulnerable, earning every moment he survives.
7. Copshop
Grillo, Young and Butler are all on their A games here… Lamb brings a comedic yet terrifying personality to his villain… I loved the dialogue, action and story all set in one Cop Shop.
6. A Quiet Place Part 2
the sound design for this film is incredible, immersive and intense.. the kids outshine blunt in terms of performance and that’s not speaking lightly of her talents, a great theater experience that feels truly unique.
5. South Park : POST COVID
there’s something to be said about making me feel bad about the misfortune of one of the most evil characters in cartoon history, these specials left a surprising amount of reflection on how i view my own morality and empathy while delivering some pretty engaging South Park humor and charm.
4. Godzilla vs Kong
big monke vs lizzy, big fun, can’t wait for another
3. Spider-Man : No Way Home
a movie like this shouldn’t exist let alone in the quality that it is at… this movie made me realize how dog s*** in comparison this year has been in terms of comic book movies… the stakes are massive yet small just as much as the inner conflicts… the consequences are real, Holland brings out a home run performance, with some of the best shots & action sequences in the MCU let alone the Home Trilogy. DaFoe absolutely proves why once again he is a powerhouse talent and out-doing his Spider-Man 1 performance all those years ago, if you haven’t already, go watch this now
2. West Side Story
went in with zero expectations, only a trailer that i felt didn’t fully invest me… and i left the theater smiling singing these tunes the rest of the night. Spielberg demonstrates his talent by carefully crafting one of the best remakes of a musical put to film without even so much as prior experience making a musical to begin with… all the actors are perfectly casted, every note feels sung just right, this is a fine tuned movie in every way & while it’s at number 2 it’s probably objectively the most well made film of the entire past 5 years let alone just this year.
1. Dune
I have never felt so immersed into a world’s lore, characters, conflicts, etc.
I have never felt more sure that this world was real, it all feels so tangible…. every performance is outstanding, the special effects are incredible, the editing & pacing felt fast paced but never felt like it was in a rush. This was my most anticipated for a reason and it delivered and more for me
In.
Bo Burnham’s Inside f***in wrecked me bro. The songs are so catchy and well-written.

Of all your scifi experiences, Dune is where you felt the most immersed? Not knocking you or the flick but of all the positives I didn't think that would be one of em.
I got positive s*** to say about Dune but the immersion was dry as the desert

I'm not even gonna touch that one cause half these niggas don't have to do anything but be white boys and they're already in the green with their target audience

feels like a much more tangible/realistic world/universe then others do for me, i feel fully in the world.
very few Sci Fi movies can do that for me tbh

ill ignore the rest
to be honest there’s a lot of movies that came out that i never got around to that i could see being on this list

You know how in interstellar every planet was all 1 thing? The ice planet was ice all over.
The water planet was water all over.
Everything was homogenous. Dune had all these different factions but those factions felt stiff. Which could be something they went for on purpose idk. Though I liked Dune more, outside of like one instance, I think that's something BR2049 did better.

2049 def on par in terms of this i think for me but exploring Arkanis, Giedi Prime, and Caladan never once felt stiff for me at all.
the waves of sand crashing, feeling each vibration that the characters could feel underneath their feet. The cold night air, each rain drop, the culture’s way of life surviving the landscape.
