Yes the entire show is this ridiculous
ok sorry for the long post I just finished Finding Frances and kinda wanted to share my thoughts and kept going.
Finished the series last night since The Rehearsal is popping off, and I'm so upset I took so long to watch this show, but I'm mostly surprised at how beautiful the ending was.
NFY always had these little touching moments of humanity that were more like little glimmers as opposed to full scenes in an episode. Seemed like it was just a fun novelty idea for an episode that evolved into this crazy documentary, and though it still had its comedic moments (MUD 2, Bill arguing with the fake husband, the 57 year reunion), it evokes emotions that I never felt watching NFY before. Its the relatability: we all grow old, and we dont want to have regrets and look back like "i wish i did this/that." I think everyone watching had a thought of a past lover or something the regret at some point.
Even though Bill makes it challenging to root for him towards the end (touching June, cant see from others POV etc), it stil feels heartbreaking listening to the phone call and Frances telling him that he has all he wanted, even with 0 kids and not marrying his lost love... And then for her to say she has 9 grandkids. Man... I'm glad he didnt' go up to the door because I think that would have been a mess. June recognizing his voice after was sweet though, and I did love how Nathan ended it.
"Its easy to look at someone else's life as a cautionary tale. After all, no-one wants to be old and filled with regret. But if you look closer, and see that that life was filled with moments of sincere joy, however fleeting, its hard to say if it was really a bad life after all."
And the way it all lends itself to the way Nathan uses his relationship with Maci as a metaphor for the entire series is really poignant, and that final conversation they share really drives it home. Sure theres a fun little nod to Nathan's "character" finally being able to converse and socialize with other people and not be (too) awkard.
"You're filming something... it's kind of the purpose, right?"
That sentence, along with the music, the quick shot of Nathan looking directly at us, kind of puts the final piece into place of a puzzle that, when completed, I'm still not sure what its message is. (You can't believe everyhting you see? Human behaviour can be predictable and manipulated?) Either way, it leaves you asking questions.
Nathan asking her for the final drone shot as she holds out her hands as if its an obligation since the cameras are running/its for the show, but she's also an escort that he's paid for, just another layer of "acting" and another curtain for the audience to try to pull back.
I think this entire final sequence (and obviously the actual rehearsal part) is what possibly inspired Nathan to do The Rehearsal. Starts off fairly simple and is getting increasingly complex and is blurring the lines of what is real and what is acting. (Are the actors, who are playing actors, acting?)
If anyone here has seen the show Review, how does this compare to it?
I love Review and Andy Daly in general. If you liked Review, you’ll love anything made by Nathan.
Finished season 1, this s*** is a riot.
So far the hardest I laughed was the whole grandson pee gas station scene. That caught me way off guard

This is one of the funniest things i ever seen fr
What’s kind of sad is that dude got divorced in 2014 and this episode aired 2015 so I’m going to assume this was probably filmed sometime after his divorce
I remember he also talked about that with the private detective, must have been really in his feelings
